Have you ever found yourself stuck trying to figure something out?
Lol, I mean if you're a human, I'm guessing, "YES."
But seriously... like maybe you felt like your next step was eluding you...
Maybe you didn't get the role you wanted, and you're wondering what to do next.
Maybe you're feeling uninspired in your singing practice, questioning your direction, or trying to decide which opportunities are worth pursuing.
Or maybe you're simply feeling a little lost.
You know you want something to change, but you're not quite sure what that something is.
I don't know about you but when this happens, my knee jerk reaction is to go straight into problem-solving mode.
What do I need to do? How do I fix this? What's the RIGHT answer?
We want to figure it out. Immediately!
(Or as my son used to say when he was little: ADMEDIATELY! )
It makes sense!
But...... WHAT IF trying so hard to find the answer is actually getting in our way?
One of the things I explore with singers inside my Joyful Singing program (AND in this week's Joyful Singing Episode!) is the power of Explore.
It's the ability to approach a problem with a "beginner's mind".... to observe, ask questions, and discover what's going on without immediately judging it or trying to fix it.
Think about how little kids explore the world.
They can become completely fascinated by something as simple as their own toes!
They're not trying to accomplish anything. They're just curious.
As adults, we can lose that ability because our inner critic, perfectionism, and need to get things right can make us feel like we should already have the answers.
But when we rush to solve a problem before we fully understand it, we might end up trying to solve the WRONG problem. Or get bad intel.
So here's a little exercise to try the next time you're feeling stuck.
Pretend you're a fascinated anthropologist. (stay with me... )
Think about what an anthropologist does: they study human behavior.
The anthropologist doesn’t want to interfere, they only to watch and study and take a record of what they notice.
Every little discovery is fascinating.
So in pretending to be an anthropologist, your job isn't to judge the situation or fix it. You're simply observing and gathering information.
So right now.... think about a challenge you're facing in your singing, your career, your creative life, or even everyday life. Then ask yourself:
“Without blame or judgment, what are ALL the relevant factors that might be contributing to this problem?”
Write it all out.
-What are all the relevant factors as it relates to you?
-What are all the relevant factors as it relates to others?
-What are all the relevant factors as it relates to your set of circumstances?
-What haven't you considered yet?
Resist the urge to jump straight to a solution. Just get curious.
You might discover that the problem isn't quite what you thought it was.
You might uncover a possibility you hadn't considered.
Or you might simply understand yourself and your situation a little better.
And from there, your next step may become much clearer.
You don't have to figure everything out in one sitting.
Sometimes, moving forward begins with giving yourself permission to simply explore.
And speaking of moving forward…
If you've been wanting to reconnect with your singing, get back into a regular practice, give yourself and your voice a little TLC, and/or reconnect to your singing goals and get back on track......I'd love to invite you to join me for something I'm putting together!
The 7-Day Vocal Reboot runs November 8–14, and it's a chance to make some space for your voice, reconnect with your goals, and get some momentum going again.
Think of it as a vocal spa week....with vocal warmups, guided mindfulness, journaling, and mindset support to help you reconnect with yourself and your singing.
Included is:
- My Vocal Reconnect Mini Course (which you have lifetime access to!)
- A private community space with daily check-ins and support from me
- Two Live Calls where we can connect, set intentions, reflect, and explore your next steps together.
And it's just $37!
This isn't about pushing harder or adding another thing to your to-do list.
It's about creating a little space for something that really matters to you.
If you've been thinking about getting back to your singing or are in need of a reset.... this is your invitation.
