When Singing feels Hard, Do This.

inspiration singer tips Apr 08, 2026

There was a time when singing felt easy.

  • Effortless.
  • Free.
  • Joyful.

You didn’t think about it, you didn’t analyze it... you just did it.

I have this vivid memory of being a little girl,
standing on a booster seat in my living room,
using my pink blankie as long flowing hair,
just fully in it.

There wasn't a voice in my head telling me how it “should” sound.

It just felt spontaneous, fully embodied and totally free.

Somewhere along the way… that changes.

We become more aware, more self-conscious and more focused on getting it right.

We worry about what other people think and without even realizing it… singing starts to feel harder.

If that’s where you are right now- feeling held back, overthinking things, and feeling frustrated…

It’s because something really important got left out of the process:

Play.

When singing becomes only about technique…
we lose the very thing that makes it feel natural.

Curiosity, experimentation, exploration... these are the very ingredients to freeing our voices. That's where we find our answers.

One of the biggest shifts you can start making right now is this:

👉 Let yourself explore your voice without needing it to sound good.

Even if it's for just a few minutes.

Let go of an agenda and an outcome.  Release the need to “figure it out.”

Just try exploring for the sake of exploring.

I know it's hard! We want to sing the high note already! We want to get to the bottom of it.

And it might feel weird... a little uncomfortable....

But this is often where breakthroughs occur!

This is exactly what I dive into in this week’s podcast episode:
